I am fortunate to reside in the very place where my family's journey began. I've traveled to the locations that hold significance in my family's history. Locations where they resided, played, attended school, experienced heartbreak, and simply existed. Upon arrival, eagerly scour the surroundings for any remnants that might have coexisted with my ancestors. Perhaps a river rock that my grandmother skipped across the river. A path once traveled by Mary, one of my great-great-grandmothers; or an iris patch lovingly tended to by my Great Granny Roberts. In these moments, my purpose is to discover forgotten knowledge or strength that they may have left behind. By using foraged materials, found objects, photographs, and casts, these bits of almost forgotten wisdom, and lost connection are brought too light. They are brought to light and live on within these works of art.
